Hello Clan Hay,
I am new to this forum and glad to be here. Have been researching my family roots for the past several years, making great strides with my mother's family but not so fortunate with my Hayes line. My great great great grandfather, Terence Hayes (born in Ireland), immigrated to the States with his family from London in 1866. All of his children were born in London. Census records show both of his parents were born in Ireland. So I thought I was Irish. Couldn't find any more information regarding where in Ireland or any further ancestry.
Then I joined the Genographic project sponsored by National Geographic for deep roots ancestry through DNA analysis of the Y chromosone (12 markers) which is only passed male to male and mutates very slowly. I expected my results to match or nearly match with a great number of others with Irish ancestry. Didn't happen. My Hayes deep roots are Scandinavian. The only perfect matches to me of all 12 markers in the data base (over 70,000 samples from all over the world) were two men of Norweigian ancestry. The most near matches, 1 mutation, were with Scotland, Norway, Iceland, some in France. So my Hayes ancestors must have been Vikings from Norway to Normandy to Scotland. Fits right in with the folks of Clan Hay. Most of the Hayes samples in this DNA data base are of a different Haplotype, common in Ireland, with only a couple with roots in England that are not near matches to me.
I'm thinking the Hayes folks that I am most closely related to are here, in this forum, and interested to know if anyone here has had their DNA analysed for Y chromosone type.
Thanks,
Robert Hayes
