let's get started

Postby mannyhay on Mon Oct 11, 2004 6:04 pm

Come on all you fellow Canucks, let's see some postings from you. This is a great site and a great opportunity for us to get to know a bit more about what the Hay's in Canada have done on this side of the pond. We have a great ancestory, one to be very proud of. I wonder if we could maybe get something going for us to attend the Gathering of the Clans next August. Please respond even if you only have a slight interst in attending. Maybe we could arrange our own tour. One week, two weeks, I know it will be money well spent. In the meantime, tell other members of the clan about this site, and about the Gathering of the Clans.

Well I have to say I'm shocked  to only see one posting in the Canada section! That will have to change.
I'm new to this and I am not familiar with the Clan gatherings, but I am curious.

Hello and may I say I'm also new to this site however I have checked some things out before here and find it a great wealth of info.... But I am at a dead end as it stands now looking back into my family tree ... SO what to do but go to Scotland myself as I want to settle a mystery which I must admit is taking me a long time to find the answer???

I am planning a trip to Scotland in a year and a half, actually it will be my return to Europe to visit places I didn't see when I lived in Europe in the 80's .... So I will probably also visit Rome too seeing I know it so well.

But ONE THING for sure I do plan on playing saint Andrews Golf Course when I'm there seeing it's very close to Clan Hay land??? Maybe part of the mystery lies there???

Tom, I don't know what your mystery is or how far advanced your family history might be, but have you tried logging onto Scotlandspeople at http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ ?

This is a very valuable source of information, particularly in the Old Parish Records. For 6 pounds or equivalent, you get a week's unlimited searching of Scottish records and can order copies or certificates on line.

Another source I found most helpful was the "Statistical Accounts of Scotland".... I forget the URL but you will get it on Google.... these are two sets of descriptions of the parishes in the late 18th and early 19th centuries and so give a wealth of local information. Most were written by clergy who were, of course, usually the best educated and best-informed folks in the district. You need to know the parish from which your ancestor came.

I am not suggesting you abandon your trip to Scotland, but you might be able to get the same information from the comfort of our own computer room as you can in a library in Scotland, and not have to wait 18 months to get it!

Well I have not been here in ages, but it seems, from what I can gather, our clan has a tendency to wander. I know my own lineage, which emigrated to canada, now are everywhere from the east coast to the west of both Canada and the US
Anyone who is connected to the Hay's who came here in 1837 from Berwick on Tweed, I would like to hear from, as we could perhaps exchange information
Gary
My ancestors came to Harvey New Brunswick in 1837 from Berwick on Tweed. Any additional information, please e-mail me.
Thank you,

Hello

Postby glenda on Sat Oct 21, 2006 4:00 pm

Hello everyone I'm a new user of this site. My mother was a Hay from the Campbellford area in Ontario. I find it very interesting to be a part of this very old clan.

I am starting to do the family history and ws hoping that I could get some information on descendants of of Donald and Janet Hay. They arrived in Canada 1857 and settled in Pittsburg Township by Kingston Ontario, from Strathspry Scotland by Inverness
Donald, James ,John, Charles, Alexander and Jessie were their children
I am looking to contact any descendants of this family and exchange family history
